general contractor | mission building and renovation

This remodel was a very unique project that Sara took on in collaboration with the owner’s contractor while a project architect at Ascent Architecture and Interiors. The existing home is a designated historic structure at both state and city levels, with the original portion dating from the 1920s, so the team was required to obtain approval from the historic review committees at both state and city levels for the proposed layout and design changes. Detailing of remodeled elements were required to be true to existing components, and where elements were added to the exterior of the home, the city’s historic preservation department required exacting details be submitted to confirm that the new pieces were in keeping with the original design.

Layout changes on this project included relocating the entry door from a side wall to face the street for better flow, relocating the kitchen and opening up the north portion of the house to create an open kitchen/dining/sitting area, reconfiguring the main level bed and bath to create a master suite and separate powder room, and reconstructing two rear decks for usability and safety. New metal railings, in keeping with designs from the era of the original home, were designed for the two new rear decks. Corbels at the posts supporting the decks were detailed to match the corbels existing at the front entry porch, and significant upgrades were performed on the exterior of the home to help ensure that it will last another lifetime.
